Scope and Contents Typescript of the diary of Thomas Eliel Blanchard (b. 1840) of Columbus, Georgia. Its dates are November 29, 1860 to February 18, 1861. The main events mentioned are Blanchard's feelings for an unnamed local girl, the secession of Georgia, and his participation as a member of the Columbus Guards in the inauguration of Jefferson Davis in Montgomery. There is also a typescript of a letter (December 1, 1864) from the Camp of the 46th Georgia Regt near Franklin, Tennessee addressed to “Mother”...

Boyd Letters

Scope and Contents

Typescripts of Civil War letters, mostly from Casper W. Boyd (1836-1862), who served with company I of the 15thAlabama. The letters begin in 1861 with descriptions of camp life. There are also letters from his brother, James A. E. Boyd. There are several letters relating to Casper Boyd's death at Charlottesville,VA in June of 1862, as well as correspondence relating to placing the name of Casper Boyd on the Confederate States of America Roll of Honour in 1915.

These are typescripts of letters to Miss E. J. Smith from various Confederate solders from 1862 to 1865. The correspondents include: James A. Maddox, of the 20th Georgia Regiment; G. A. Weldon of the Army of the Potomac; her fiancé, A. S. Cameron; William T Johnson; and Julius E. Edmonds, Company K of the 40th Georgia Regiment. These men describe action inVirginia at Richmond, Yorktown,Manassas and Centerville; and in Maryland,South Carolina and Georgia.

Photocopies and typescripts of 5 letters from Jefferson Davis to Benjamin Milner Blackburn, editor of The Madisonian, a newspaper published in Madison,Georgia. They are all written from Beauvoir,Mississippi and range in date from 1881 to 1883. A note indicates that the originals are owned by Antoinette B. Rust (Mrs. Ernest Rust) of Columbus,Georgia.

Typescript of the roster of the Iron Works, owned by Miss Joan Warner, granddaughter of the commanding officer, Maj. James H. Warner. Also a brief typescript biography of William Fee (1832-1892) who served in the C.S. Naval Iron Works Battalion during the Civil War, and afterwards was a fireman, plumber, tinsmith and business owner.
