Edge R. Reid Collection
Scope and Contents
The collection, consisting mostly of photocopies, includes newspapers, maps, and a city directory collected by Reid, a former editor of the Columbus Ledger. Those relating specifically to Columbus include: Muscogee Democrat, Extras, June 21, 1846; Muscogee Democrat and Mercantile Advertiser, July 13 & November 29, 1849; maps of Georgia, 1791, 1834, 1842, 1856; map of the city of Columbus, 1889; photographic enlargements of portions of 1872 and 1882 aerial perspective maps of Columbus; and photographic negatives of the first Columbus City Directory, 1859-1860. Other materials include information on coins made by Templeton Reid in 1830; four historical maps of Georgia; a page from Ulster County Gazette, January 4, 1800; copies of the Paris Edition of The Stars and Stripes, August 13 & 16, 1945. The donation also included two books by Dexter C. Seymour about Templeton Reid, which were cataloged and available in the Archives reference collection.

Biographical / Historical
Edge R. Reid (1904-1985) joined the staff of the Columbus Ledger and the Columbus Enquirer in 1928 and retired from the newspaper in 1975. He was a graduate of Mercer College in Macon, Georgia. During World War II he served with the Army Signal Corps in the U.S. and France. He retired in 1978.
