The collection includes various publications printed by Gilbert as well as newspaper clippings, business receipts of the Daily Sun dating from the 1860s, etc. Specific items of local interest include Books in the Care and Possession of James J. Gilbert., 1940; “List of Old Newspapers Published at Columbus”; The Chattahoochee's Song, words by Frank Stanton and music by Louis F. Chase; List of Premiums to be Awarded at the annual Fair of the Columbus Industrial Association, 1871; Annual Reports of the Officers of the City of Columbus, Ga., 1874-75, 1877; various publications of the Chamber of Commerce; Brush Electric Light and Power Co., 1893; Columbus Water Works Company (1904); and The Columbus News, June 24, 1943.

Biographical / Historical

James Johnson Gilbert was born on October 31, 1865 in Columbus, Georgia, the son of Thomas and Fannie Johnson Gilbert. He attended public school in Columbus, as well as Professor James J. Slade's School for Boys, and graduated from the University of Georgia, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. In 1894, he married Evelyn Cargill, the daughter of John Wesley and Maria Louisa Cargill. He was in the printing business and president of the Gilbert Printing Company until his retirement in 1937. He was the author of A History of the First Presbyterian Church of Columbus, Georgia, During the First 100 Years of its Existence. He was also an active Mason. He died on April 6, 1948 and is buried in Linwood Cemetery.
