Biographical / Historical
The Columbus Area Library Association, CALA, began operations in 1985. CALA is dedicated to advancing the interests and services of libraries, information centers, and other library related agencies in the Columbus/Phenix City area. CALA pursues this goal by presenting programs and participating in activities that promote books, reading, and/or libraries. These activities enable librarians and media specialists in the area to be informed of local library services, systems and resources
Among the activities CALA has sponsored is a free book appraisal booth at the mall, bookbinding evaluation, and donation of books to charity and needy children. CALA has also published "The Columbus Book of Lists" and "The Columbus Sports Trivia Book". CALA awards a yearly LIBRA award to a community librarian who exemplifies outstanding librarianship qualities. Membership in the organization is open to anyone interested in libraries.
