Scope and Contents

This collection consists of scrapbooks and loose-leaf notebooks of newspaper clippings covering mainly Columbus-area baseball and basketball games. It also includes information on many high school and college athletic events, including players and coaches.

Biographical / Historical

Cecil Albert Darby, Jr. was born on March 17, 1924, the son of Cecil Albert Darby, Sr. and Jewel Owen Darby. He died on January 28, 2017, and is buried in Parkhill Cemetery in Columbus, Georgia. His father, who died in 1962, was a conductor for 43 years with the Central of Georgia Railroad. The younger Cecil was always interested in sports, and worked for the Columbus Ledger as a sports writer for 36 years. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1942 and briefly attended the University of Florida. He served 34 months in the Marine Corps during World War II, mostly in the Pacific. According to a profile of him in a column by Glenn Vaughn in the Ledger-Enquirer in 1990, he was known for his encyclopedic knowledge of all sports, but his particular passion was professional baseball in Columbus, Georgia.

This collection was a gift of Cecil Darby via Jimmy McKinstry in 2006, with later additions to the collection in 2014 and 2017.
