Biographical / Historical

The Winchester subdivision was established in 1961 by the Woodruff Company, the same year the Winchester Garden Club began. The club organized on April 11, 1961 under the sponsorship of the Radiance Garden Club. Approximately 20 members were present at this first meeting. The ladies concentrated first on their own subdivision and evolved to embrace the city of Columbus and the state of Georgia in its outreach. Its first project was enhancing the pool area and maintaining the subdivision sign on Woodruff Road. In February 1962, the club secured a walking postman for the subdivision so that residents cold install mailboxes on their houses. The same year, a traffic light was installed at the junction of Manchester and Woodruff roads. The club became federated in 1968.

Among their many projects were Easter eggs and Christmas stockings stuffed with dollars for the state mental hospitals. The members served as hostesses for the Salisbury Fair and Historic Columbus Foundation home tours. Gifts have been given to the children at the Ann Elizabeth Shepherd Home, ditty bags for soldiers in Vietnam, trees have been planted around various schools, and lights put on the Dillingham Street Bridge.

See the folder on the club’s history (Box 1, Folder 1) for more information.
