Agreement and Deed, 1857 April 3; 1857 April 17
Scope and Contents
This three-way agreement involving Stephen Ingersol, Josephus Echols, and the City of Columbus Water Lot Company relates to the construction of a dam across the Chattahoochee River. There were 4 items to this agreement. The first item was that Stephen M. Ingersol agreed to the construction of dam across the Chattahoochee on the conditions laid out in this document. The second item was that Stephen M. Ingersol would have the right to build a cotton mill on the Alabama side of the river with certain restrictions on the use of the river’s water, as laid out in the agreement. The third item is the dismissal “as finally settled” of any and all lawsuits by Howard & Echols (or either partner) and/or the Water Lots Company against Stephen M. Ingersol and any lawsuits by Ingersol against Howard & Echols (or either partner) or the Water Lots Company. The fourth item was the conveyance by Stephen M. Ingersol of Girard town lots #33 thru #39, #66 thru #68, and #1 thru #4 to Josephus Echols and the conveyance by Joseph Echols of Girard town lots #69 and #70 and Echols’s share of Girard town lots #112 and #115 to Stephen M. Ingersoll [2 copies], April 3, 1857
