Biographical / Historical
Minnie was the daughter of Mrs. Bradley’s brother, Henry T. Hall, for whose estate Bradley served as executor. Hall also appointed Bradley as the guardian of his then 10-year old daughter, Minnie. The will directed that all expenses for her room, board, education, etc. be paid from his estate, estimated in 1903 to be worth around $75,000. On attaining the age of 21 in July of 1914, she received $3,632.54, the residual of her father’s money. (This document is filed in the final returns folder of her father’s estate.) She immediately thereafter, she appointed W.C. Bradley as her power-of-attorney and he continued to manage her affairs. In 1917, after her marriage to Claude Scarbrough, she signed an identical Power-of-Attorney in her married name, re-confirming W.C. Bradley as her POA. The following folders contain full documentation of her expenses while a ward of the Bradleys. These include her bills and receipts, as well as statements of income received by her father’s estate. These expenses were paid by W.C. Bradley as executor of her father’s estate. They also include the periodic reports made by Bradley to the probate court. These papers provide an extremely detailed record of the life of a person of her gender, age and social situation in the first part of the 20th century. Every item bought for her is recorded, from hair pins, to piano lessons, school expenses, train tickets, clothing, medical care, eye-glasses, luggage, jewelry, books, sheet music, tax payments, legal fees, and much more besides.
