Processing Information
The scrapbook has letters from Lt. Hill to family and friends back in Columbus. They begin when he was in officer training school beginning on April 5, 1918 at Fort Gordon, Georgia. These letters were written on YMCA stationary. Several were address to his father, Joseph Booker Hill who lived at 815 Broad Street in Columbus. Others are to his sister, Mary Hill “Mamie” or Mrs. L.G. Bowers.
In a letter dated Jun 2, 1918 to his sister he mentions General Perishing and signs it as Sargent T.W. Hill.
In a letter dated June 9, 1918 he mentions Uncle Albert and Aunt Lucy, as well as Paul Blanchard, Sam Hatcher and George Kyle.
By June he was in France. He mentions in a letter dated June 29 that France is a beautiful country. He saw Paris. Also mentions that he’s hungry and buys some eggs.
In a letter of August 10, 1918 to Katherine (Mrs. Cliff Averett) he says that he is now a commissioned officer and serving with General Pershing.
In a letter dated August 25, 1918 he says he has been in Northern France, then Southern France where he finds applies. He stayed in a Chateau with a big bed, way behind the front line.
In addition to items pasted in the book, there is also a plethora of loose material inserted among the pages of the scrapbook. Among the items, both attached and loose are: postcards; publications of the Army and Navy Legion of Valor; newspaper clippings; receipts of purchases for export; telegrams; his certificate of Graduation from Officers’ Training school; poetry; battleground maps; German money; photographs; his demobilization order, dated March 12, 1919; documents relating to his trip to France and Germany in 1927; his Sigma Alpha Epsilon certificate from the University of Alabama in 1916; various items relating to the American Legion; his graduation program from Columbus High School in June of 1916; a farewell to his mother to be delivered in the case of his death.
This item is extremely fragile due to the high acidity of the paper, both of the scrapbook itself and many of its items.
