Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

Chief Newberry's wife, Eunice, probably compiled this small scrapbook of clippings and the related loose items and donated them to the Columbus College Archives.

It contains a small scrapbook of clippings, 1941-1949, and similar materials dealing with Newberry and his term as the Columbus, Georgia Chief of Police; a photograph of Judge Hubert Calhoun as a boy; an article about the John Frank Stringfellow murder case in which Chief Newberry was involved; and a photograph, brief biography, and obituary of Edmund Wesley Joines (1833-1900), who served as a Columbus policeman in the 1870s and 1880s. Joines was a Confederate veteran captured several times by Union forces after the Battle of Gettysburg.
